Hamas en Fatah tekenen eenheidsakkoord in Cairo: enige vijand is Israel

Er kwam donderdag oorlogszuchtige taal uit Cairo, waar de Palestijnen hun nieuwe overeenkomst tekenden:

"The only campaign we have is against Israel," he added. "We want an independent, sovereign Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip."
"Israel does not respect us," Mashaal said. "Israel never stopped refusing our rights. Israel only grabs our land."
"We must open a new strategy," he added. "We do not want to declare war - we're only asserting our rights. We want to put pressure on Netanyahu so Israel recognizes our rights."
In conclusion, Mashaal said: "Our common enemy is Israel. Israel must be fought through force and diplomacy."

Abbas added that, in eventual peace talks, he would not agree to temporary borders, which he called "illegitimate and illegal." He also said that he "will not accept one Israeli soldier on our sovereign land."
He also lamented the "ethnic purges taking place in Jerusalem. Land has been confiscated in favor of settlers and an apartheid wall was built."
"To face this terrorism, our people have acted heroically in order to face this colonization and face the settlers," Abbas said. "Everyone respects the resistance of the Palestinian people, which proves their iron will when they decide to mobilize their energies and face the occupation."

Mashaal: Palestinians' common enemy is Israel

Palestinian factions sign unity accord in Cairo; Abbas says Israel used Fatah-Hamas division as an excuse to avoid peace.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who heads Fatah, and senior Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal on Wednesday endorsed a deal to end a four-year rift.

Mashaal spoke at the Cairo ceremony, saying: "We are prepared to pay any price for reconciliation."

Abbas: 'We turn forever the black page of division'

Abbas opened his speech with a moment of silence for the "martyrs."

At the ceremony, he said: "We announce to Palestinians that we turn forever the black page of division."

"We announce the good news from Egypt, which has always carried its national and historical responsibility towards the Palestinian people. Four black years have affected the interests of Palestinians. Now we meet to assert a unified will," he said.

"Israel must choose between peace and settlements," he added. "The Israeli occupation has escalated against our people and our land, and they have tried using this division between us as an excuse."

Abbas said that the international community has "come together to indicate the Palestinian people's right to an independent state."

"The Palestinian state needs to be born this year," he added.

"The Palestinian cause has gained momentum and a unanimous voice, the latest of which was in the UN Security Council that condemned the building of the settlements," Abbas said. "In the past two years, the UN, the IMF and the World Bank have all praised the work of the PA and reiterated the readiness to announce the Palestinian state now."

"We will not ask for permission to act upon internal Palestinian affairs," he said. "We do not interfere in internal Israeli affairs like elections. They have no right to interfere in our internal affairs."

Abbas said that Israel has said in the past that it would not negotiate with the Palestinians because they are divided.

"Now that we announced reconciliation and everyone accepted it, they come out with a different tone and say Abu Mazen has to choose between the Israelis and Hamas," he claimed. "We said Hamas are our brothers, our family. We may differ a lot, but we agree a lot. All peoples have different sects and factions. We are looking for the minimum base for agreements. Hamas is part of us."

"We do not ask who is at the top of the Israeli government or what happens in the Knesset. We deal with whoever represents the Israeli people," Abbas added.

'Are you punishing us for unity?'

In response to Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz withholding tax revenues to the Palestinian Authority, Abbas said: "Are you punishing us for unity? We did not break Israeli law. We did not attack Israelis like they attack us."

Abbas also recounted a meeting with AIPAC: "I met with members of the Jewish diaspora in Washington - yes, I meet with Jews," he said. "I met with AIPAC for an hour and a half, and they said we will tell Obama and Netanyahu that we have a Palestinian partner."

"I don't want people to think that I'm defending AIPAC, I would like to reiterate this," he added.

"We will have to forget all the negativity that clouded the past and look at the positivity that will come with the challenges of the future," Egyptian Intelligence Chief Mourad Mowafi said.

"I pray to Allah that our next celebration will be the formation of a Palestinian state," he added.

The ceremony had been delayed by a disagreement over protocol shortly before it began over whether Mashaal should sit on the podium with Abbas or down among other Palestinian delegates in the hall.

In the end, it was reportedly decided that Mashaal would give a speech, but would not sit on the stage with Abbas

Ramallah-based website Palestine Monitor claimed to have a text of the Palestinian National Reconciliation Agreement, which called for elections in one year, cooperation with the PLO, and the formation of a Higher Security Committee made up of agreed-upon professional officers.

MKs Ahmed Tibi (UAL-Ta'al), Taleb a-Sanaa (UAL-Ta'al) and Muhammad Barakei (Hadash) participated in the signing ceremony, after being invited by the Egyptian government.
